This pivotal moment—one of the most iconic in Shakespeare’s work—became the foundation for our own meta-theatrical approach. We imagined the stage as if a wandering troupe had arrived in Arkansas to perform Hamlet, creating a world where performance and reality constantly overlap. A false proscenium framed the action, and the entire space was dressed to evoke the improvisational charm of itinerant theatre. Visually, the production blended elements of American vaudeville and commedia dell’arte with the exuberant, handcrafted aesthetic of Brazilian baroque street theatre. This fusion shaped the environment, the textures of the set, and the costumes, creating a vibrant, layered universe for one of Shakespeare’s most iconic tragedies. The James M. Torres ︎ Mattew Sewell Concept “What did the hippie movement look like in Arkansas?” We looked into the wave of people moving from northern cities to the South, chasing a simpler life closer to nature. That led us to a world where NYC meets the Ozarks — a set built from a simple landscape idea, with layers, levels, and lots of movement. Sharp city lines meet decorated fences. The band’s onstage the whole time. Newspaper clippings fall like the headlines of the time. We pulled inspiration from street theater in Minas Gerais to the energy of the Lower East Side — a colorful mix of cultures and stories. This theater is envisioned as an architectural extension of the sidewalk, inviting the audience to become part of the structure as they ascend a continuous, accessible ramp that wraps around the stage. The stage is highly adaptable, capable of transforming into proscenium, thrust, arena, or alley configurations. Spectators may sit on modular chairs at ground level or gather freely along the ramp, forming a “floating” audience with shifting perspectives. Facing the cafeteria, the theater fosters a dynamic connection between performance and daily life. Its right-side façade remains closed to the adjacent Hall of Arts, offering acoustic protection for nearby studios. The design reinterprets traditional Arab architecture through a contemporary lens. Detached from the existing building, the new structure stands as a modern gesture that honors regional heritage. Coral-patterned mashrabiya panels provide shade, natural airflow, and sound control. Constructed with a modular steel framework, the theater emphasizes flexibility and efficiency. Its components are custom yet standardized, allowing for easy storage, transport, and assembly. This building never truly closes. It remains a living structure—an open, breathing extension of the patio, always accessible to the community. Here, architecture becomes part of the performance, blurring the line between spectator and participant. The story is set in Berlin in the early 1930s, as the Nazi party rises to power. The musical revolves around the seedy Kit Kat Club, and as the story unfolds, the characters are drawn into the increasingly tumultuous political climate of the time. Cabaret explores themes of sexuality, love, and the tension between personal desire and political turmoil. It also offers a powerful commentary on the rise of fascism and authoritarianism, and on the dangers of remaining passive or apathetic in the face of growing intolerance. In today’s political climate—marked by nationalism, xenophobia, and ongoing struggles for social justice—the musical serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance, activism, and resistance. The scenography for this production was conceived as an act of resistance, grounded in the historical and political context and committed to representing diversity and subversion in all forms. The set conveys fear and decay while also suggesting resilience through symbolic elements and spatial strategies. The project reflects how art can play a transformative role and serve as a means of resisting oppression and intolerance.
